Not so funny

You know what? No Rant D’Jour today. Not much seems appropriate. Check back tomorrow.

Blog Post for Wednesday 3/2/11 – 27 degrees at 6 AM – Cold, dark and ugly. Go away winter. Please.

After some processing I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing funny about what happened yesterday.

In the immediate aftermath, in classes I was teaching and in the company of my teaching peers I made some jokes yesterday.

Upon reflection it was like whistling while walking by a graveyard. Gallows humor.

You are never more aware of life when you are close to death, and I am told the men in fox-holes all have a good sense of humor.

But the outcome yesterday could have been quite different.

I don’t know the adult student (45 year old Christian C. Zaccagni Sr.) who brought the loaded .380-caliber Kel-Tec automatic handgun to L.C.C.C. yesterday. His classes are in a different building and his is a different career path than the one I teach.

The weapon of choice

Published reports allude to a drug arrest in his past. Charges were dropped.

Yesterday he broke several laws and scared the hell out of a lot of people. I don’t think these charges will be dropped.

I take life in general and contact with my fellow travelers on this earth with a sense of humor. As Bob Dylan said in his song “It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)”

“But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked”

Yesterday set me back on my heels a bit.

What drove the point home, more than anything, was the look later that night in the long-suffering wife’s face after she watched the TV coverage.

She looked at me.

She loves me.

She fears for me.

This should not be the aftermath of a day at a higher learning institution.

P.S.-as the long-suffering wife left for work today, a day that I work from home, she gave me a very tight hug.

She didn’t say “I am glad you are not teaching today.”

She didn’t have to.

Honestly, when you look at the newspaper reports nobody was in danger or threatened. He never agreed to a search of any kind. The campus security are not being paid to be municipal law enforcement on campus as much as they might like to think they are. The man’s 4th amendment rights were violated. The firearm pictured and reported is a semi automatic not an automatic pistol. There is No law stopping him from having a firearm on campus. There is school rules that probably forbid it though. I hope he pleads not guilty and gets the case thrown out entirely. He will most likely be expelled from school there and may not be accepted at any other school to learn his chosen career path. That seems like it is too severe a punishment alone for a person who simply made a mistake. It is possible he had it in his pocket prior to school at his home where it is perfectly legal for him to do so without a license. I quick review of the laws and what a kelly stop is should make people see it more clearly. A kelly stop only actually refers to outer clothing in general. The man was not even wearing the jacket when it was searched. That should have required a judge to issue a search warrant after a bonifide police officer proved probable cause to think there was a weapon in there.
